Why Use Lubricants When Trying to Conceive?

A common problem for couples who are trying to conceive is vaginal dryness. The lack of a moist vaginal environment during intercourse can be painful, even harmful, for the female. The dryness results mainly from a lack of sexual arousal. The lack of arousal occurs if sex becomes mechanical and timed, which is often the case when couples have been trying to conceive for a long time. Such couples also often experience stress and depression, which further reduce sexual arousal.

Couples deal with the problem of vaginal dryness by reaching for the lubricant. It is estimated that over 25% of all U.S. couples that are trying to conceive always use lubricants during intercourse. What many of them don’t know is that most lubricants can reduce their chances of conceiving a baby.

How do the Lubricants Inhibit Conception?

There are several hundred lubricants available in the U.S. A number of studies have shown that most existing vaginal lubricants on the market, including many of the major brands, are spermicidal (harmful to sperm). The lubricants wreck their havoc mainly by subjecting sperm to oxidation, changes in pH level, and other harmful environmental conditions.

In one study, published in 1996, scientists from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas tried to determine the effects of natural vegetable oils and vaginal lubricants on sperm motility and viability. Two vegetable oil products commonly employed as vaginal lubricants and four widely used vaginal lubricants were investigated, including K-Y Jelly, Astroglide, Replens, and Touch. The sperm used in the experiment came from healthy donors, and was obtained through masturbation without the use of lubrication.

The scientists mixed the lubricants with the sperm and determined the effects on sperm motility at 1, 15, 30 and 60 minute intervals using manual motility counts and computer-assisted semen analysis. Sperm viability was evaluated with a dye known as Hoechst 33258. The effects of the lubricants were compared with those of a spermicidal agent, Gynol II, which acted as the negative control of the experiment. The effects of the lubricants were also compared with a conception-friendly medium, Ham’s F-10, which acted as the positive control.

The investigation found that the lubricants inhibited sperm motility by 60-100% after 60 minutes of incubation. Sperm exposed to the lubricants Replens and Astroglide were non-motile and non-viable after incubation for 60 minutes, similar to the Gynol II negative control. Canola oil had no detrimental effect and was indistinguishable from Ham’s F-10 in terms of sperm viability and motility. It was concluded that, for couples with infertility problems, the use of vaginal lubricants during intercourse is not recommended. In cases where a lubricant is essential, careful selection was deemed prudent in minimizing detrimental effects.

Another way that lubricants can inhibit conception is by hindering the movement of sperm. Being very thick, lubricants make it very difficult, even impossible, for sperm to make their way to the cervix. The situation is comparable to trying to swim through peanut butter.

The movement of sperm through the cervix and into the uterus is facilitated by cervical mucus, which, nearing ovulation, decreases in viscosity (becomes thin). The same mucus is what prevents sperm from entering the uterus during the non-fertile phase of the female cycle, when it increases in viscosity (becomes thick). Unless the sperm make it to the cervix, they have no chance of making it to the ovum. Trapped in thick lubricant, they become unable to make their journey and die.

Which Lubricants are Safe to Use When Trying to Conceive?

There are currently at least four vaginal lubricants on the market that are claimed to be fertility-friendly: Pre~Seed, Sasmar Conceive Plus, Zestica Fertility, and ConceivEase. The validity of at least one of these – Pre~Seed – has been verified through independent scientific analysis.

In the study in question, published in 2008 in the journal ‘Fertility and Sterility’, the scientists began by investigating the effect of vaginal lubricants on sperm motility. Semen samples were taken from 13 subjects and incubated in human tubal fluid (HTF), which is sperm-friendly. These would act as the positive controls of the experiment. Semen from the same samples were also incubated in 10% mixtures of the lubricants Pre~Seed, FemGlide, Astroglide, and Replens. After 30 minutes, sperm motility was assessed using a method known as light microscopy.

It was found that percent motility did not differ significantly between the HTF controls and Pre~Seed, while the lubricants FemGlide, Replens, and Astroglide produced a significant reduction in motility.

The scientists then set out to investigate the lubricants’ effects on sperm DNA integrity. Semen samples from 12 patients were incubated in HTF. These, again, would act as the positive controls of the experiment. Semen from the same samples were also incubated in 10% mixtures of the lubricants K-Y Jelly, Pre~Seed, and FemGlide. After 4 hours, the sperm were analyzed for percent DNA fragmentation.

The experiment found that there was no significant difference in percent DNA fragmentation between the HTF controls and Pre~Seed, while there was a significant decline in sperm DNA quality with FemGlide and K-Y Jelly.

The scientists concluded from these two experiments that Pre~Seed does not cause a significant decrease in sperm motility or DNA integrity, in contrast to the other lubricants that were investigated.

Are there Any Better Alternatives to Vaginal Lubricant?

Even though there are apparently safe lubricants on the market, most authorities would agree that by far the best lubricant to use is the vagina’s own natural secretion, which can be increased with foreplay. Couples are advised to take their time working up to intercourse, engaging in more touching, hugging and kissing. Fifteen to twenty minutes of foreplay should be enough to stimulate an adequate level of moisture, thus negating the need for lubricant. If foreplay fails, couples are advised to use warm water as a lubricant. Water isn’t toxic to sperm and will not interfere with the sperm’s ability to reach the cervix.

Sexual Frustration and the Common Man – Does it Hurt Or Help Society As a Whole?

Sexual frustration is a topic discussed in one form or another everywhere from street corners to high school gym classes, local bars to office cubicles and it’s not always in the form of sex talk. Sometimes it takes on the actions of howling men towards a beautiful women, to heated arguments and brawls between one or more frustrated men. Do our sexual desires drive society as a whole? Do men seek out world wide fame or enormous amounts of money just to in essence, get laid, or procreate? Can anyone out there actually deduce the connection logically and pinpoint exactly the correlation between procreation, the sex drive and the evolution of our modern society? I’m not going to analyze large statistics or online surveys trying to figure out the connection. I’m going to look from a different perspective. My own unique experience from when I myself was down the road of despair in sexual matters.

I was a frustrated young man at one point. My drives, aspirations, goals, and everyday living revolved around “getting into a woman’s pants”. I remember one day having tons of work to do but waking up like many men do, with a hard on. I was feeling sexual but had no means at the time to share those feelings with another person. So what does a guy do in that situation? Yes. You guessed it, masturbate. You look for media types of sexual arousal and so to speak, go to town. Except that particular day I was working at home and the feelings in my pants stopped me from getting any real work done. I decided to search for a little pornographic stimuli, delayed as long as I could, until finally I couldn’t hold out any longer. If I didn’t have an orgasm soon I would not get anything done that day. So I Did. Then a giant light bulb went off in my head just after the “baby batter release” as it was so eloquently called in the film, “Something about Mary”.

I remember clearly thinking. Was that all? All day I spent frustrated and my mind was so cluttered with wanting sex that I got nothing done. All for a three minute release which was very disappointing because there was no one there to share it with me. I also remember thinking that if any one man, to a million men a day, had those same feelings which is very likely, then our society at some level has functioned that way. Sexual arousal and then a release driving men to either curl up inside their own frustrated minds and removing themselves from those around them, to trying to take over the world with their exasperated attempts to gain wealth and/or fame in hopes of unlimited sex and power.

So what come first? Is it the drive to procreate that manages our sexual habits, or is it our sexual arousal or awareness that keeps our eye on the prize. The prize of a rewarding family and a guarantee to have our genes be passed on. A gene can not arbitrarily function on its own. It uses our bodies to convey itself and it does so in the best known manner. Stronger and smarter creatures move on, others die away unable to create another version of itself. A man usually experiences an orgasm so fleetingly; unlike a woman who can experience the same orgasm for longer periods of time. And she can experience it again and again until she tires. Similiar to how a woman is generally built to nurture and how she must bear the children. Its a long term investment. With men it’s different. it seems our initial bodily response would be to build our self back up, produce more sperm, and again seek out the next available willing partner.

I am not a firm believer that any one sex drives our species. I feel without one, the other will not survive. It’s a mutual agreement where both is needed and by doing so guarantees similar yet better copies. Let’s assume our society had been built by man and his need to release himself from the sexual frustration our genes have built inside us. Do we then become a society of quick schemes, easy way outs, rather than the long term investment a woman’s run society would possess. The female more concerned about the future and how to make sure her offspring has a lasting survival and in turn, keep the process moving along. But since I have already stated I believe our society works on both levels we have the instant gratification on one end, and the long term investment on the other. Metaphorically speaking men are the advertisement or quick lure, and women hold the content or the actual material listed in the table of contents of life. After all a great written book means nothing if there is only one person reading it, so advertising is usually good practice.

The sexual frustration of the common man serves a person then. It’s one piece of the greater puzzle in which we all share our won little spot on the map. One in which we all contribute to in our own unique manner but are built from the same core materials. If the same feelings of “I need to release my sperm” drives the common man to achieve more than his fellow man, even if it’s on his own terms such as an inward journey it does have a purpose. How that same man chooses to deal with his issues of frustration will in the end determine what type of man he will be and how his offspring or those around him will be affected. For example, a nerdy boy in school whose sexual frustration might propel him into the realm of great wealth may not ever offer as much towards our societies real growth as the curious inward driven man wishing to better himself. Using the sheer energy associated with not having a partner to better himself selfishly and in turn actually offering more to the growth of society.

The genes in our bodies wishing to survive can’t directly control how we use this energy. It only controls how much energy or the actual root of those wants or needs. Yet those same genes gives us a great tool for deciding how we use that energy, or anger, that tool is our brains. And when our brains are used in a stable productive manner it gives us the ability to choose our actions. If you are a slightly frustrated man with the physical and mental ability to have great sex with a partner but are left with feelings of, “that its?” because you have no one to share your experience with, how you act on those urges can in fact affect who you become. When we share the moment of orgasm with a lover who desires the same, with a life long partner or one night, I can tell you that those same feelings are much different that what I felt after masturbating by myself. A certain connection was made so I was able to experience a longer lasting emotionally stability or immediate content feelings of lying next to someone you care deeply for. After that a new drive would envelope my body, such as protection and nurturing.

I do not always enjoy answering a question with a question but there is also the theory that a great question will often lead to many more great questions. I’ve already taken on the belief in this article that sexual frustration can drive our society for better or for worse, but in which manner does the frustrated man’s urges drive us? Is it the drive to procreate? Is it the drive to release our sperm and gain that instant gratification? Or is that same drive actually man’s search for that longer lasting “female orgasm” which is achieved when you are with a partner and don’t just roll over and go to sleep? The feelings associated with the joking, kissing, immersing yourself in after-play and relishing every drop of pleasure from it?
